Im Namen des Vereins Steine der Erinnerung begrüße ich sie ganz herzlich zu unserer ersten Eröffnung in diesem Jahr. Mein Name ist Matthias Beier und ich werde sie heute durch die Veranstaltung führen.
Zunächst wird der Bezirksvorsteher von Ottakring Franz Prokop sprechen, seine Rede wird von Daliah Hindler auf Englisch vorgetragen.
Ich stelle zunächst kurz unseren Verein vor.
Dann werden wir den Stein für das im Widerstand ermordeten Ehepaar Hermine und Lothar Dirmhirn eröffnen, die Station wurde von Herrn Herwig Dirmhirn, deren Enkel initiiert.
Wir freuen uns auch über einen Beitrag von Frau Birgit Elsner Vertreterin eines Gedenkprojekts zum Widerstand im Sandleitenhof.
Anschließend fahren wir zur Kuffner Sternwarte um die Wandtafel für Moriz von Kuffner zu enthüllen. Dort werden Dr. Norbert Fialla für die Initiatoren, dem Verein Kuffner Sternwarte sprechen, sowie für die Bezirksvertretung die stellvertretende Bezirksvorsteherin Eva Weissmann.
Die Ausstellung über den Widerstand im Sandleitenhof kann dort besichtigt werden.
On behalf of the association “Stones of remembrance”, I very warmly welcome you to our celebration.
My name is Matthias Beier. I have the honour to guide you through the event. First the Mayor of the 16th District Franz Prokop will speak, translated by Daliah Hindler.
I’ll introduce our association in a short speech.
Then we will inaugurate the stone of Hermine and Lothar Dirmhirn who were murdered because of their resistance against the Nazi regime. The stone was initiated by their grandchild Herwig Dirmhirn.
Ms. Birgit Elsner will speak for the project that crafted an exhibition about the resistance in the Sandleitenhof.
After that we will drive to the Kuffner observatory to inaugurate the plaque there. We are very happy that some oft the descendants of Moriz von Kuffner are with us today. Doctor Fialla, on behalf of the Association Kuffner Sternwarte, the initiator of the plaque, will speak to you, as will the vicemayor of this district.

Unser Verein wurde 2005 von Elisabeth Ben David Hindler initiiert und von ihrem Partner und späteren Mann Karl Jindrich technisch möglich gemacht. Zu unserem Großen Schmerz sind beide letztes Jahr verstorben. Wir, Daliah Hindler, Vally Steiner, Ernst Fitzka, Roswitha Hammer und ich führen das Projekt jetzt weiter.
Our Association was initiated in 2005 by Elisabeth Ben David Hindler, and technicaly designed by her husband Karl Jindrich, sadly they both died last year. We, Daliah Hindler, Vally Steiner, Ernst Fitzka, Roswitha Hammer and I have taken over from them as best as we could.
Lange wurde in Österreich über das dunkelste Kapitel unserer Geschichte geschwiegen. Erst ab den 1980ern hat man begonnen Denkmäler zu setzten. Diese Denkmäler wurden im Gedenken an alle Opfer gesetzt und das ist gut und richtig.
Doch wo waren die Namen der Opfer, wo ihre Geschichte? Elisabeth Ben David Hindler hat es sich zum Ziel gemacht, nicht nur der Ermordung der Opfer zu gedenken sondern auch deren Leben. Steine der Erinnerung sind im Gehsteig eingelassene Messingplatten. Sie erinnern an frühere BewohnerInnen, die von den Nazis deportiert und ermordet worden sind.
Die Steine der Erinnerung symbolisieren die Rückkehr der Opfer an den Mittelpunk ihres Lebens. Für viele Angehörige sind sie auch symbolische Grabsteine, ihre Lieben sind ja in der Vernichtungsmaschinerie der Nazis verschwunden.
Mittlerweile haben wir über 400 Orte der Erinnerung gesetzt und gedenken über 1400 Menschen.
Viele Wiener und Wienerinnen kümmern sich ehrenamtlich um Steine in Ihrer Umgebung und helfen uns bei deren Pflege, die damaligen Opfer sind damit tatsächlich wieder ein Stück weit zurückgekehrt.
Auch die Stadt Wien und deren Bezirke unterstützt uns finanziell und bei jeder Eröffnung sind auch VertreterInnen der Stadt dabei. Es ist wundervoll, dass die Steine der Erinnerung durch die Stadt als Denkmäler anerkannt sind. Dadurch erfahren auch die Opfer und ihre Nachfahren, dass sie in dieser Stadt anerkannt und willkommen sind. Auch der Staat Österreich fördert uns durch den National- und Zukunftsfonds.
Die Arbeit unseres Vereins wäre nicht möglich ohne die vielen ehrenamtlichen Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter und die vielen Spenderinnen und Spender. Ich möchte an dieser Stelle all diesen Menschen und Institutionen danken und auch ihnen, die sie heute gekommen sind.
There was a long period of silence in Vienna regarding the most horrible part of our history. Only from the 1980s onwards the city began to build memorials remembering all the victims, which was good and right. But where were the names of the victims? Their stories?
Elisabeth Ben David Hindlers goal was not only to remember the murder but the life of the victims.
They should return to the places where they had lived their life and were part of the community. Indeed every new stone is a symbol of homecoming.
For many relatives the stones are symbolic gravestones, because many victims vanished in the murderous Nazi Machine of the Holocaust.
We now commemorate more then 1400 victims at over 400 Places of Remembrance.
Today many Viennese take care of the stones in their neighbourhood so the victims indeed returned.
The City of Vienna and its Districts are supporting us as well and representatives of the city were present at every inauguration of stones in the past 12 years. The city and its Districts are sponsoring us and, that is perhaps the greatest gesture, Vienna is acknowledging the stones as official memorials.
The Republic of Austria is sponsoring us too through the National Fonds and the Futurefonds of the Republic. The work of our association wouldn’t be possible without the work of our many volunteers.
I want to thank all of them and I want to thank you for coming to our celebration.

Ich möchte mich gleich beim Verein Kuffner Sternwarte dafür bedanken, dass wir ihnen bei ihrem Projekt, behilflich sein durften. Vom Verein sind hier: Dr Fiala, der das Projekt initiiert hat, Dr. Wuchterl und Frau Einhorn. Auch begrüßen möchte ich die Familie Eberstatt, Nachfahren der Kuffners und die stellvertretende Bezirksvorsteherin Frau Weissmann.
Kurz zu unserem Projekt:
Steine der Erinnerung sind im Gehsteig eingelassene oder an der Wand angebrachte Messingplatten. Sie erinnern an frühere jüdische BewohnerInnen, die von den Nazis deportiert und ermordet worden sind.
Steine der Erinnerung geben den ehemaligen WienerInnen wieder ihren Namen und einen Platz in ihrer früheren Heimat. Für die Angehörigen sind sie symbolische Grabsteine für ihre Lieben, die ja kein Grab haben. Steine der Erinnerung regen zum Nachdenken an und verändern den öffentlichen Raum. Es gibt sie mittlerweile an über 400 Plätzen in Wien.
Ich finde es fantastisch das der Verein Kuffner Sternwarte so engagiert ist und mit seinen Projekten ebenfalls Vergangenheitsbewältigung zum Thema macht. Frau Einhorn hat ein Buch zum Thema geschrieben. Dr. Wuchtal und Frau Einhorn haben Kontakt zur Familie aufgebaut und Dr Fiala hat in jahrelanger Arbeit die Wandtafel initiiert und realisiert. Es ist sehr schön, dass die Familie Eberstatt kommen konnte. Die Urenkeln von Moriz von Kuffner mit ihren Familien.
Wir sind dem Verein Kuffner Sternwarte auch sehr dankbar, dass sie heute die Ausstellung Widerstand in Sandleiten bei ihnen ermöglichen.

Now a few words about our association Stones of Remembrance: We wish to keep alive the memory of the murdered jewish inhabitants that lived in Vienna before the Holocaust. Their culture and tradition was an important part of Viennese life and their huge impact is still visible today. In this spirit we set the “Stones of Remembrance” in an effort to memorialize the former inhabitants in the places where they once lived.
We are here today to honor the life and work of Moriz von Kuffner and I think it´s very honourable that the Association Kuffner Observatory is so active in remembering also the darker chapters of the Observatories history. Three members are here:
Doctor Fiala, who initiated the plaque and will later on speak to you.
Mrs. Einhorn, who wrote a book about the topic,
and Doctor Wuchterl who together with Mrs Einhorn made contact with the relatives of Moriz von Kuffner, the Eberstatts. It is very special that his great-grandchildren and their families are here today.
We are grateful that the association Kuffner Observatory allowed us to use their space today to present the exhibition about the resistance in Sandleiten by Birgit Elsner.
I would like to thank the City for allowing us to install the plaque on their property and for sending a representative to our festivity.
